Cal Newport's research on Deep Work shows the friction that kills focus is almost always at the start. A short pre-session ritual removes it.
The 4-step ritual
- Name the outcome — before starting the timer, write in the Focus notes: *when this session ends, I will have finished X*. Vague sessions produce vague results.
- Close the exits — kill Slack, silence phone (LemTask has a *Do Not Disturb* toggle that mutes web push during focus)
- Cue the body — same drink, same music, same corner. Rituals train your brain to switch modes on autopilot
- Start the timer immediately — no *just checking one email*. The ritual ends with the button press
Track ritual consistency
Add a daily habit *Ran deep work ritual*. After 3 weeks it becomes automatic and focus starts feeling effortless.
