Comparison Guide

    LemTask vs Day One

The category-defining journal app — beautiful, deep, and laser-focused on memories. Just don't expect it to plan tomorrow.

TL;DR — LemTask vs Day One

Day One is the gold standard for journaling on Apple devices and produces beautiful printed books from your entries. It is not, and doesn't try to be, a task or habit app. LemTask gives you a fully featured journal (mood, prompts, tags, photos) plus tasks, habits, focus timer and gamification — all sharing one streak and XP system. Pick Day One for memory-keeping. Pick LemTask if your journaling is connected to action.

Our Take: LemTask vs Day One

Day One has owned the journaling category since 2011 for good reasons: their UI is gorgeous, end-to-end encryption is real, and the printed-book export is one of the few times a digital app produces a physical artifact people actually treasure. Where Day One falls short is scope — it's a journal and only a journal. The moment you want your reflection ritual connected to the habits you're trying to build or the tasks you're trying to complete, you need three more apps. LemTask collapses journal, habits and tasks into a single workflow with one motivation system across all three. Day One stays the better choice if your sole job is capturing memories beautifully.

    Where Day One wins

We built LemTask, so we'd love to say it wins everywhere. It doesn't. Here's where Day One is the better pick — honestly.

End-to-end encryption is genuine zero-knowledge — Day One can't read your entries even if they wanted to. We encrypt at rest and in transit but aren't zero-knowledge yet.

Photo journaling on iOS is unmatched — auto-import from camera roll with location, weather and music metadata baked in.

The printed book export ($14.99 per book) is one of the best physical-from-digital experiences in any consumer app.

Audio entries with waveform display are a small touch that Day One does better than any competitor.

How to switch from Day One to LemTask

A quick, no-data-loss migration in a few steps.

    1. 1

      Export your Day One journals

In Day One, go to Settings → Import / Export → Plain Text or JSON. JSON keeps photos, locations and timestamps; plain text is simpler and works for any importer.

    2. 2

      Import into LemTask Journal

Settings → Import → Day One JSON. We preserve dates, photos, mood and tags. One Day One journal becomes one LemTask journal — and you can have unlimited, even on the free tier.

    3. 3

Connect journal to habits and tasks

Pick three habits you want your daily reflection to reinforce (e.g. 'no phone before noon'). LemTask logs them next to your journal entry so the streak is visible at the moment you reflect.

    4. 4

Decide what stays in Day One

Many users keep Day One purely for photo memories and printed books, and use LemTask for daily reflective journaling. There's no exclusivity — running both is fine.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can LemTask really replace Day One for journaling?

For most journaling use cases — yes. We have daily prompts, mood tracking, tag clouds, photo entries and unlimited journals even on the free tier. Where Day One still wins is end-to-end encryption, the printed book export and Apple-first photo workflows. If those matter, run both: Day One for memories and books, LemTask for reflective daily journaling tied to habits.

Does LemTask have end-to-end encryption like Day One?

Not zero-knowledge yet. Your entries are encrypted at rest in the database and in transit over HTTPS, but our staff can technically restore access if you lose your account — Day One cannot. If zero-knowledge encryption is non-negotiable, Day One is the better choice for now. We're tracking customer demand for true zero-knowledge journaling for a future release.

Does LemTask have daily journaling prompts?

Yes. The Journal module ships with deterministic prompt rotation (no LLM costs, no user data leaving our servers) covering reflection, gratitude, planning and review categories. You can rotate prompts daily, weekly or pin a single one. Prompts are localised in all 9 supported UI languages.

Can I import my Day One archive?

Yes. Export your Day One journal as JSON (Settings → Import / Export → JSON inside Day One) and upload it inside LemTask Settings → Import → Day One JSON. We preserve entry dates, photos, mood, tags and location metadata. Each Day One journal becomes a separate LemTask journal so the structure carries over.

Does LemTask print physical books from journals?

Not currently — Day One's printed book service is one of their best features and we don't have an equivalent. If a physical printed book of last year's entries matters to you, that's a Day One reason. We're studying print partners but have nothing to announce.

Will LemTask sync my journal across devices?

Yes — instantly. Web, iOS, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux all share the same realtime backend. Compared to Day One, our Web app is a first-class citizen rather than a stripped-down companion. If you regularly journal from a browser at work, LemTask is the better daily driver.

How does LemTask Journal connect to habits and tasks?

Each daily journal entry sits next to your habit grid and your top focus task for the day. The same streak system applies across all three — finishing a habit, completing your top task and writing your journal each contribute to one momentum number. Day One keeps the journal isolated from action; we deliberately stitch them together.

Is LemTask Journal in French / Spanish / Hindi?

Yes. The Journal module is fully localised in all 9 supported languages including French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Hindi, Filipino, Punjabi and Arabic with right-to-left support. Day One is well-localised too, so this is parity rather than a clear win — but worth confirming if you journal in a non-English language.

    How we tested

We use both LemTask and the competing app daily across personal and team workflows. Pricing is taken directly from each vendor's public pricing page on the date listed below. Feature parity is checked by attempting the same job-to-be-done in both apps (capture, plan, execute, review). When a feature exists but is gated behind a higher tier, we say so explicitly. We also re-read the most recent G2, Reddit and Product Hunt threads about the competitor before publishing.
