Comparison Guide

    LemTask vs Lunatask

Privacy-first ADHD-positioned task app — beautiful and earnest, but thin on motivation mechanics and team features.

    TL;DR — LemTask vs Lunatask

Lunatask is a privacy-first, end-to-end encrypted task app designed with ADHD users in mind. It's deliberately quiet — no gamification, no team features, no focus timer integration. LemTask takes the opposite approach: louder motivation (XP, streaks, levels), focus timer, habits, voice brain dump and team features, all in one app. Pick Lunatask for calm and zero-knowledge privacy. Pick LemTask for momentum and dopamine.

    Our Take: LemTask vs Lunatask

Lunatask is one of the most thoughtful task apps to launch in the last few years — privacy-first, end-to-end encrypted, ADHD-aware UI, mood tracking baked in. As a single-user app for someone who wants a calm, encrypted system, it's genuinely lovely. The two real gaps are motivation mechanics and team features. Lunatask deliberately avoids gamification — the philosophy is 'don't add dopamine pressure to ADHD users'. LemTask takes the opposite philosophical position: ADHD brains often need MORE structured dopamine, not less, and gamification provides that loop in a healthy way. There's no objectively-right answer here; pick the philosophy that matches how your brain works.

    Where Lunatask wins

We built LemTask, so we'd love to say it wins everywhere. It doesn't. Here's where Lunatask is the better pick — honestly.

Genuine end-to-end encryption — Lunatask cannot read your data even if compelled. We encrypt at rest and in transit but aren't zero-knowledge yet.

Local-first architecture means the app works offline forever, with sync as a layer on top.

Cheaper paid tier ($4.99/mo) than LemTask Pro ($14.99/mo) — if you don't need our extra features.

Smaller, more opinionated app — fewer concepts, less to learn, less to ignore.

    Why Users Switch to LemTask

    Gamification on purpose

ADHD users often need MORE dopamine, not less. We turn productivity into a game.

    Voice + AI

Brain dump by voice, let AI structure it. Lunatask is type-only.

    Single app for everything

Tasks, habits, focus timer, journal — Lunatask is mostly tasks + mood.

    Honest take

Lunatask's end-to-end encryption is genuine. If zero-knowledge privacy is non-negotiable, they win — we say so.

    Customer Testimonial

"Lunatask was thoughtful but quiet. As an ADHD founder, I needed louder feedback — XP, streaks, dopamine hits. LemTask is built for that."

How to switch from Lunatask to LemTask

A quick, no-data-loss migration in a few steps.

    1. 1

      Export from Lunatask

In Lunatask, go to Settings → Export → JSON. You'll get every task, habit, mood entry and journal note in a structured archive.

    2. 2

      Import into LemTask

Settings → Import → Lunatask JSON. We map tasks → tasks, habits → habits, mood entries → journal mood logs, and journal notes → journal entries.

    3. 3

      Decide on your motivation defaults

If you're moving to LemTask for the gamification, turn on XP toasts, streak counter and weekly review. If you want a quieter experience, you can disable XP animations and keep only the streak counter.

    4. 4

Set up your daily focus task

Pick one focus task per day. LemTask's daily focus + streak system is the closest match to Lunatask's calm-but-purposeful design philosophy, just with louder feedback when you complete.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is Lunatask really designed for ADHD users?

Yes — explicitly. The founder is open about building Lunatask after finding mainstream task apps overwhelming. Design choices include muted colours, optional sections, no gamification pressure and a 'just one thing today' default. It's a deliberate philosophy. LemTask shares the ADHD focus but takes the opposite position on dopamine — we believe gamification helps ADHD brains, where Lunatask believes it harms them. Both views are defensible; pick the one matching your brain.

Can I import my Lunatask data into LemTask?

Yes. Lunatask exports a clean JSON archive (Settings → Export → JSON) with tasks, habits, mood entries and journal notes. Upload via LemTask's Settings → Import → Lunatask JSON and we map each entity type to its LemTask equivalent. Mood entries become journal mood logs, journal notes become journal entries, habits stay habits. Your historical streak data is preserved.

Does LemTask have end-to-end encryption like Lunatask?

Not zero-knowledge yet. Your data is encrypted at rest in our database and in transit over HTTPS, but our staff can technically restore access if you lose your account — Lunatask cannot. If true zero-knowledge encryption is non-negotiable, Lunatask is the better fit. We're tracking demand for zero-knowledge mode and may ship it in a future release, but it's not currently available.

Why does LemTask have so much gamification when Lunatask deliberately avoids it?

Different philosophical bet about ADHD and dopamine. Lunatask's view is that gamification adds pressure and burnout risk. Our view, supported by the ADHD users we've spoken to, is that ADHD brains often need MORE structured dopamine to engage with tasks at all — and a healthy gamification loop (XP, streaks, optional celebration) can provide that. Neither view is universally correct; this is genuinely down to how your individual brain works.

Does Lunatask have a focus timer?

Not as a built-in feature — Lunatask is intentionally minimal. The recommended workflow is to use any external Pomodoro app alongside. LemTask ships the focus timer (with a growing-tree visual and customisable session lengths) as a core feature, integrated with task completion so finishing a focus session can auto-mark a task done.

    Is Lunatask cheaper than LemTask?

Yes — Lunatask Pro is $4.99/mo (or $50/yr) vs LemTask Pro at $14.99/mo. The price difference reflects scope: Lunatask is a tightly-focused single-user task and habit app with encryption; LemTask is a broader productivity system with focus timer, AI, voice, team features and gamification. If you don't need our extra surface area, Lunatask is meaningfully cheaper.

Does LemTask have mood tracking like Lunatask?

Yes — mood logging is part of our Journal module. Each daily entry can include a mood rating (1-5) plus optional energy and focus ratings, and we render trends over weeks and months. The implementation is similar to Lunatask's; the difference is that mood data sits next to your habit grid and tasks rather than being a separate emotional-tracking section.

Can Lunatask scale to a team?

No — Lunatask is deliberately single-user. There's no shared lists, no assignments, no team workspace. If you're solo, that's fine. If you ever want to share a project or coordinate with someone, you'll need to add a second tool. LemTask covers personal AND team workflows in one app, so the same tool that holds your personal task list also holds your shared team Kanban.

    How we tested

We use both LemTask and the competing app daily across personal and team workflows. Pricing is taken directly from each vendor's public pricing page on the date listed below. Feature parity is checked by attempting the same job-to-be-done in both apps (capture, plan, execute, review). When a feature exists but is gated behind a higher tier, we say so explicitly. We also re-read the most recent G2, Reddit and Product Hunt threads about the competitor before publishing.
