    Can't start

    • Body double — call/Zoom a friend, work silently together
    • 2-minute rule — start the smallest possible version
    • Lower the bar — change the goal from 'do it' to 'open the file'
    • Change the environment — different room, café, library
    • Put on instrumental music or brown noise

    Can't switch

    • Set a hard stop alarm 10 min before
    • Write the next task on paper before stopping the current one
    • Stand up and walk a lap — physical transition cue
    • Park your in-progress thought in one sentence so you can pick it up
    • Use a sensory cue (different music, different drink) to mark the switch

    Can't finish

    • Define 'good enough' before resuming — write it down
    • Set a public deadline (text someone you'll send it by X)
    • Body-double the final push
    • Cut scope: ship 70% today, polish later
    • Reward queued before you start — pull from your dopamine menu

    Recovery (after a bad day)

    • No catch-up plan tonight — sleep is the recovery
    • Tomorrow's plan: 1 task, not 3, not 5
    • Eat a real meal and drink water before re-planning
    • Forgive the day in writing — one sentence, then close the laptop

Executive dysfunction is when you *know* what to do, *want* to do it, and still can't make your body start. It's not laziness. It's not a willpower failure. It's a known feature of ADHD, autism, depression, long COVID, post-concussion recovery, and burnout — and the fix isn't a motivational quote. It's a toolkit of tiny mechanical strategies you can reach for in the moment.

This toolkit is a curated set of those strategies, grouped by the specific failure mode you're hitting *right now*. You don't need to read it all. You need to find the one item that gets you off the couch this minute, then use a different one tomorrow.

    Grouped by failure mode

Why this beats generic productivity advice

Standard productivity advice ("just start", "eat the frog", "use a timer") assumes a brain whose execution circuit works the same way every day. ADHD brains, autistic brains, and burned-out brains don't have that consistency. What worked on Tuesday won't work on Thursday. A *toolkit* — many small interventions, picked situationally — outperforms any single technique.

    How to use it

Bookmark this page. When you're stuck, scan the section that matches your stuck-ness, pick *one* strategy, do it for 5 minutes. Tick the box. Done. If it didn't work, pick a different one tomorrow. Over weeks you'll learn which strategies your brain responds to and which don't — that personal data is more useful than any productivity book.

Pair with the ADHD task planner for the daily structure, the dopamine menu for the reward side, and the task paralysis helper when you're fully frozen.

    Mode d'emploi

    1. 1

      Identify the failure mode

Are you stuck starting, stuck switching, or stuck finishing? Pick the matching section.

    2. 2

      Choose one strategy

Don't read the whole list — pick one item that sounds doable in the next 5 minutes.

    3. 3

      Do it for 5 minutes

Most strategies work because they lower the bar to start. 5 minutes is the magic threshold.

    4. 4

      Note what worked

Tick the box. Over weeks you'll learn which strategies your brain actually responds to.
