Wekan (formerly LibreBoard) is the most mature open-source alternative to Trello. You can self-host it on your own servers, giving you complete data sovereignty — your project data never leaves infrastructure you control. For organizations with strict data residency requirements or those philosophically committed to open source, Wekan is the de facto choice.

The kanban board experience closely mirrors Trello. You have boards, lists, and cards with drag-and-drop. Cards support descriptions, checklists, attachments, labels, due dates, and member assignments. The familiarity means teams transitioning from Trello can adapt quickly.

Deployment is straightforward for technical teams. Docker, Snap, and various one-click installers make setup manageable. The community is active, with regular contributions and a responsive GitHub repository. Security patches are released promptly, which matters for self-hosted applications.

The gap between Wekan and commercial alternatives is primarily in polish and ecosystem. The UI works but lacks the smoothness of Trello — drag-and-drop can feel slightly laggy, animations are basic, and the visual design is functional rather than delightful. Documentation exists but can be inconsistent, and some advanced features have limited guidance.

Integrations are minimal compared to Trello's vast Power-Up ecosystem. If you rely on connecting your PM tool to dozens of other services, Wekan will feel limiting. Mobile apps exist but are less polished than commercial offerings.

Wekan is the right choice for organizations that need self-hosted, open-source kanban boards with full data control.
