Overview

Restyaboard positions itself as the most feature-rich open-source Trello alternative. While Wekan mirrors Trello's simplicity, Restyaboard adds Gantt charts, time tracking, voting, card aging, WIP limits, and numerous card-level features. On paper, it offers more than many commercial tools — all for free if you self-host.

The feature breadth is genuinely impressive for an open-source project. You get kanban boards with swimlanes, calendar views, list views, card templates, custom fields, and reporting. Power-ups extend functionality further, mimicking Trello's extensibility model but without per-user costs.

Self-hosting gives you full data control, and the installation process is documented (though less streamlined than Wekan's Docker approach). The source code is available for inspection and customization, and the project accepts community contributions.

The reality of using Restyaboard is rougher than the feature list suggests. The user interface is functional but noticeably less polished than Trello or even Wekan. Interactions can feel sluggish, UI elements occasionally misalign, and the design language is inconsistent across different sections. Documentation is sparse for advanced features, and some functionality feels half-finished.

The community is smaller than Wekan's, which means fewer answered questions, fewer tutorials, and less momentum. Updates are less predictable, and the long-term maintenance trajectory is less certain.

Restyaboard is worth evaluating if you need a self-hosted kanban tool with more features than Wekan provides. The Gantt charts, time tracking, and WIP limits are genuine differentiators in the open-source space. But be prepared to invest time in working around rough edges. For a polished experience, commercial tools like Trello or LemTask are smoother. For personal productivity with gamification and habits, LemTask is a different category.
